The Cougars posted a team score of 312 during the final round on the 7,253-yard, par-72 course at Briggs Ranch Golf Club for a 54-hole total of 884. Gusting up to 40 mph, a strong north wind forced the Cougars to change their early game plan for attacking the course.
"We had a crazy, cold front come in that made the course play the exact opposite of the first two rounds," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "Any time you have a north wind, you are going to have challenges on the course. It didn't help that we struggled early and got off to a rough start."
Freshman Roman Robledo held the individual lead through the first two rounds but posted a final-round 82 to final into a tie for sixth place at 215. It was the third straight tournament that the Harlingen, Texas, native recorded a career-best finish.
"Roman played great. His first two rounds kept us in the game. If it weren't for him during the first two days, we would have played from the back of the pack," Dismuke said.
Other Cougars in action were sophomore Curtis Reed (t-34th, 222); sophomore Jesse Droemer (t-40th, 224), junior James Ross (t-47th, 226) and junior Joseph Reynolds (82nd, 246). Junior Will Dusenbury competed as an individual and tied for 54th with a score of 227.
New Mexico won the team championship with a score of 861, eight strokes ahead of Texas A&M and No. 42 North Texas. Texas State (870), No. 18 Baylor (872), No. 34 Arizona (880) and No. 44 UT Arlington (883) rounded out the top-seven team leaders.
Individually, Rice's Jeff Wibawa earned medalist honors with a three-day score of 209. Baylor's Joakim Mikkelsen finished second at 210, while New Mexico's John Catlin's was third at 212.
