HOUSTON - The University of Houston Department of Intercollegiate Athletics officially rang in the new 2010-11 athletic season by hosting the annual Shasta Blast event Sunday.
More than 400 Cougar student-athletes attended the yearly event. Each team was present to listen to Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades welcome the teams back to campus and introduce the evening's keynote speaker, George Foreman.
Foreman, a native Houstonian, spoke candidly about growing up around those who told him he would amount to little and the way he mentally prepared himself to do just the opposite. He discussed his triumphant career inside the ring that included a gold medal and a heavyweight champion belt, as well as his successes as an entrepreneur, an author and an ordained minister.
Many student-athletes stood and applauded after Foreman concluded the interesting and inspiring words he had prepared for the occasion.
Coaches from each team then served their student-athletes dinner and all sat together to mingle and welcome UH newcomers to campus. Following dinner, the student-athletes took their turn throwing at their respective coaches in the "Dunk Tank." Whether or not their throws resulted in hitting the bullseye, many coaches were dunked by sneaky team members.
After the event, the Spirit of Houston Cougar Marching Band led the student-athletes, coaches and staffs to Robertson Stadium to cheer on the Cougar soccer team against Sam Houston State.
