HOUSTON - University of Houston junior Clark Mitzner posted a career-low 68 to lead the Cougars to a second-place finish Saturday morning at the Redstone Challenge at Redstone Golf Club.
Mitzner, a native of McKinney, Texas, posted 34s on the front and back nine to better his previous career low by one stroke. He was the only player in the field to shoot under par and enjoyed the first tournament title of his collegiate career.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 297 to finish two strokes behind Arkansas. Houston Baptist finished third with a score of 304.
The Redstone Challenge was a recent addition to the Cougars' 2010 spring schedule and may not appear on earlier published schedules. Following the event, Houston first-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said he was pleased with his team's effort.
"We did a lot of things well and had a chance to win if we finished better," Dismuke said. "Clark has been playing well in the last few qualifying rounds and got off to a great start. All in all, it was not a bad start"
Junior Matt Eschenburg finished fifth with a score of 74, while redshirt freshman Joseph Reynolds tied for 10th at 77.
Other Cougars in action included junior A.J. Ferries (78, 12th) and senior Jackie Lindsey (70, t-13th).
UP NEXT
The Cougars continue their 2010 spring schedule when they compete at the Rice Intercollegiate at Houston's Westwood Country Club on Feb. 15-16.
From there, the team continues its tour through the state of Texas when it plays at the J.L. Lewis Intercollegiate - hosted by Texas State, at Wolfdancer Golf Club in Los Pines, Texas - on Feb. 22-23. That will be the second of four straight tournaments in the state of Texas to open the spring season.
