HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team announced its 2009-10 schedule, which is highlighted by seven home events.
Head coach Mark Taylor is looking forward to the upcoming season and hopes that the tough competition they face will bring out the best in his athletes.
"Our staff is excited by the challenging schedule this year," Taylor said. "There are many nationally ranked teams on the schedule this season and we have scheduled such stiff competition in hopes to challenge our student-athletes to reach heights they have yet to achieve.
"Our staff believes that to be the best, you must test yourself against the best. We feel that this season's schedule gives us that opportunity."
The Cougars will hold the annual Red and White scrimmage on Sept. 30 before opening the regular season on Oct. 9-10 with the Phill Hansel Dual Meet Weekend. Following a two-week break from competition, Houston will then head east for dual meets on Oct. 30-31. The weekend will begin with duals against Duke and Georgia Tech in Durham, N.C., and conclude in Wilmington, N.C., against UNC-Wilmington and Emory.
UH returns home for the Cougar Classic Fall Invitational on Nov. 20-22, with duals against North Texas (Jan. 22) and SMU (Jan. 23) on the road.
The next three weeks will be highlighted by dual competition at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium. Houston will compete against Rice, LSU and Tulane on Jan. 29-30 before welcoming Texas A&M to town on Feb. 5.
The 2009-10 regular season will conclude on Feb. 10 with the Second Annual Sprint for the Cure Meet against Texas.
Once again, Houston will host the Conference USA Championship on Feb. 24-27.
The diving team will compete at the NCAA Zone Meet on March 12-14 in College Station, Texas before the NCAA Championship on March 18-20 at Purdue, Ind.
