Golf Finishes Seventh at Conference USA Championship

SORRENTO, Fla. - Despite shooting its best round on the final day of the tournament, the University of Houston golf team finished in seventh place Tuesday with a 54-hole score of 878 at the 2009 Conference USA Championship.
The Cougars fired an even-par team score of 288 but were unable to move up in the final standings on the par-72, 7,152-yard course at RedTail Golf Club.
Host UCF won the team championship with a score of 846, while SMU finished as runner-up at 852. UAB (861), Memphis (866), Tulsa (873) and East Carolina (875) rounded out the top-six team leaders.
Senior captain Brady Shivers posted his second round of 69 in the tournament to finish at 4-under-par 212 and tied with SMU's Kelly Kraft for sixth place.
The Seminole, Texas, native played a bogey-free round Monday, collecting birdies on the third, seventh and 17th holes on the way to his best single-round, low tournament score and tournament finish of the 2008-09 season.
Junior Jackie Lindsey posted his second straight round of 1-under-par 71 and finished at 1-over-par 217 to tie for 17th place. The Houston native birdied the fifth and 12th holes with only one bogey on the par-four eighth hole during the final round.
Sophomore transfer Matt Eschenburg rebounded from a 77 in the second round Monday to post a 73 and tie for 24th place.
Other Cougars in action were senior captain Ben Moser (76-79-83 - 238, 53rd) and sophomore transfer Clark Mitzner (79-78-75 - 232, t-48th).
UCF's Simon Ward earned medalist honors after shooting a 68 for the second straight day and finishing at 11-under-par 205, one stroke ahead of teammate Blayne Barber. UAB's Zack Sucher finished third at 209, while SMU's Draegen Majors placed fourth at 210.
