DENTON, Texas - The University of Houston golf team opens the 2008-09 season Monday when it competes at the Mean Green Classic.
The Cougars join host North Texas, UALR, Houston Baptist, Louisiana-Lafayette, New Orleans, North Texas, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, Samford, Stephen F. Austin, Western Kentucky and UTSA on the 7,147-yard, par-72 course at Lantana Golf Club.
The team will play 36 holes on Monday before wrapping up the two-day event with the final 18 holes Tuesday morning.
With a mixture of talented newcomers and proven veterans, head coach Vince Jarrett has produced another solid team for the Cougars in 2008-09. Entering his first season at UH, Jarrett feels confident with the depth of talent on the latest Cougar squad.
Three lettermen - senior Brady Shivers and juniors Ben Moser and Jackie Lindsey - return to the Cougars' starting lineup Monday. A year ago, Moser competed in all 11 tournaments and finished second on the squad with a 74.00 scoring average. The Waterloo, Ontario, native posted the Cougars' lowest 18-, 36- and 54-hole scores during the National Invitational Tournament on the way to tying for medallist honors.
With his impressive performance, he was honored as the Conference USA Golfer of the Week for March 26, 2008.
Shivers, a native of Seminole, also competed in all 11 tournaments while posting a 73.38 average. He fired a season-low 68 during the opening round of the C-USA Championship and enjoyed a fourth-place finish in the fall-season-closing Del Walker Intercollegiate.
Shivers also was an award-winning student-athlete in the classroom, being named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll for posting a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Lindsey was another regular in the UH starting lineup a year ago, finishing with a 76.31 average. The Houston native and Jersey Village product shot a 69 in the second round of the Del Walker Intercollegiate, tying for 16th place at that tournament.
Those returnees will be joined by sophomore transfer Clark Mitzner and junior college product Beau Davis.
The Mean Green Classic will be the first of four fall tournaments in which the Cougars will compete. Following this event, UH will take part in the Kansas Invitational on Sept. 15-16 in Lawrence, Kan.
