HOUSTON - The University of Houston hosted the 2008 Cougar Classic Cross Country Carnival, open to high school and junior high students, Saturday at the University of Houston's Intramural Fields.
There were 541 participants from high schools and junior highs in the Houston and surrounding areas.
The junior high races were approximately 1600-meters, one loop around the Intramural Field, and the high school race is 3200-meters, which was two loops.
The top three teams are determined by the cumulative times of the top five runners.
For the boys, Strake Jesuit finished in first place with a cumulative time of 53:14. Just behind Strake Jesuit was Kingwood High School with a cumulative time of 53:19. Third place went to Atascosita High School with a cumulative time of 55:55.
First for the girls was Kingwood High School with a cumulative time of 63:33. Clear Lake finished second with 64:57 and Deer Park placed third with a cumulative time of 68:00.
Due to the week-long rain, the course was wet and muddy, resulting in slower than expected times.
The top 15 individuals in each race received medals. The top three teams in the High School division received plaques. An overall award went to the top performers; female Lauren Smith from Brazoswood and top male was James Webb of Strake Jesuit.
