Texarkana, Ark. - Even with three golfers finishing within the field's top 26 golfers, the University of Houston golf failed to capture it first Conference USA title since 2001. Its three-day team score to 13-over-par (877) was good enough for sixth place overall.
Their sixth-place finish closes a successful season for the Cougars. Coming into the tournament UH had an outside shot at an at-large bid in the NCAA Regionals, pending a strong showing at the C-USA Championship.
The Blazers of UAB took home both the team and individual title. Zach Sucher's 9-under-par (207) was two strokes better than teammate Brad Smith to win the medalist honor. As a team, the UAB erased Memphis's six-stroke lead coming in to the day and built a nine-stroke lead of their own to pace the field with a 7-under-par (857) score.
Second-place Southern Miss closed at 2-over-par (866) followed by third-place Memphis at 4-over-par (868). Rounding out top five were SMU (9-over-par, 873) and Tulsa (12-over-par, 876).
Two strokes back of the sixth-place Cougars were East Carolina (21-over-par, 879) followed by UTEP (24-over-par, 885) in eighth. Tourney-favorite and Golfweek's #19 ranked UCF, finished a disappointing ninth at 24-over-par, 888. Marshall (35-over-par, 899) and Rice (38-over-par, 902) closed out the field finishing 10th and 11th, respectively.
The Cougars came into the final round high on confidence and expectations. But after stumbling out of the blocks on Tuesday, their confidence waned and they were never able to recapture it.
Houston's top golfer was junior Ben Moser (72-71-75) who ended the tournament tied for 13th at 2-over-par (218). Moser shot a 3-over-par 75 on the day.
Junior Steven Frazier (76-72-73) shot the team's lowest final round score as he closed 1-over-par on the day, 5-over-par (221) for the championship. Frazier finished tied for 23rd, one stroke better than fellow teammates senior Jordan Irwin(70-74-78) and junior Brady Shivers (68-73-81).
Both Irwin and Shivers closed the contest tied for 26th place at 6-over-par (222). Irwin in his last round of golf as a Cougar fired a 6-over 78 while Shivers carded a 9-over 81.
Additionally, sophomore Jackie Lindsey (72-76-79) ended the day 11-over-par after shooting a 7-over 79 on Tuesday.
