HOUSTON - The University of Houston track and field team kicked off the 2008 season with a banquet honoring their conference champions.
The dinner and awards ceremony was held Friday night in the O'Quinn Great Hall at the Athletics Alumni Building.
"I was really excited to have several of our athletes returning in what has turned into an impromptu Cougar Track and Field reunion. It was a good way to kick off the 2008 season by looking to the successes we have enjoyed over the years," head coach Leroy Burrell said.
The Cougars handed out championship rings to their Conference USA team champions including 2007 Men's Indoor Championship squad.
"We handed out our awards from last year as well as championship rings to the men's team who were the 2006 Indoor Track and Field Champions. It is really exciting to have so many of our former athletes returning so much so that we hope to make this an annual event," Burrell said.
Houston hosts the first meet of the 2008 season Saturday. The Houston Indoor Opener begins at 8 am and is scheduled to run the entire afternoon.
