HOUSTON - The Houston track and field team was back in action Friday after the first day of the 2007 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships were cut short. Storms Thursday forced the men's hammer throw and the 10,000-meter run to be rescheduled.
After competing in the first five events of the decathlon on Thursday junior Jarrett Flax took the lead into today's competition. After finishing the final five events Flax won with 6,784 points. Coming in second was sophomore Morgan Floyd (6,710 points) and in third was freshman Wesley Bray (6,592 points). Also placing was senior Nick Garza who took seventh with 5,700 points.
Freshman Brittani Williams finished third in her first heptathlon competition at the conference championships. The Houston native finished with 4,919 points. She finished behind Gaelle Niare of SMU and Ashley Reyer of Southern Miss, who finished first and second. Williams also competed in the javelin throw and finished fifth with a toss of 43.24m/141-10" and was 15th in the shot put.
After winning the pole vault at the indoor championships, freshman Alex Bentley gave a repeat performance Friday winning the outdoor competition with a personal best 5.06m/16-07.25". Also placing for the Cougars was Floyd (fifth), Garza (seventh) and Bray (ninth).
Freshman Michael Malain finished sixth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 31:21.48. The race was originally supposed to be run on Thursday night but rain forced it to be postponed until this morning. In other distance events, senior Paul Goodwin finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:33.75.
In the field events, senior Lucas Mireles turned in a third place finish in the shot put with a throw of 16.77m/55-00.25. Junior James Lee was eighth. Also finishing third was sophomore Andy Tackett. Tackett took the bronze in the javelin throw with a toss of 60.38m/198-01, a new season best.
Freshman Brandon Hubbard notched a fifth place finish in the hammer followed by teammates Tackett (eighth), Mireles (ninth) and Lee (10th). Sophomore Thomas Orr turned in an eighth place finish in the long jump.
In the women's distance events, freshman Jessica Cook finished ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:39.37.
Freshman Dayo Ogunniyi was third in the long jump after clearing 6.10m/20-00.25. Senior Rachel Easley was fourth and freshman Hylete Young was fifth. Easley was also third in the high jump after clearing 1.70m/5-07.00.
Friday's competition featured the prelims of the running events. Advancing to Saturday's finals for the men are: junior Tremaine Smith (100, 200), freshman Justin Davis (400), senior Chris White (800), and freshman Daryl Cloud (400 hurdles).
For the women Ogunniyi (100), Floyd (200, 400), freshman Quin'shundolyn McPherson (200), freshman LaNeeka Allen (400), freshman Ciara Willis (400), junior Adriane Guinn (800), sophomore Jennifer Harper (800), junior Oumama Hallal (1,500), sophomore LeeA'ndrea Robinson (100 hurdles) and sophomore Seun Adigun (100 hurdles) will compete in tomorrow's finals.
Through eight events the men lead the way in the team standings with 73 points ahead of Memphis (69.50) and UTEP (49). The women sit in fourth with 31 points behind Rice (54.50), SMU (38) and UTEP (36).
Saturday's finals will conclude the three-day meet. The running events will begin at 6 p.m. Prior to that the field events will wrap-up beginning at 4:30 p.m. with the men's triple jump.
