Cross Country Heads To Conference USA Championships
10/25/2007 12:00:00 AM | Cross Country
Senior Stephen Magness will be at the head of the Cougar men as they face an 8K race with a start time of 10:30 a.m. MT. The Cougar women will be led by Jessica Cook in a 5K set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
The Cougars have visited the Santa Teresa Country Club Spanish Dagger course before when they traveled to UTEP for Lori Fitzgerald Invitational. The men had an exceptional performance placing second behind then ranked No. 7 UTEP. Magness earned Conference USA Cross Country Runner of the Week for his performance at the invitational on September 18, 2007.
The women struggled with the altitude and the run itself, placing fourth on the UTEP course. There will be a new route for the Conference Championship, however head coach Ryan Turner believes that seeing and experiencing the course prior to the Championships will greatly benefit his team this weekend.
The Houston men will be facing two nationally ranked teams in No. 3 UTEP and No. 17 Tulsa while the women face 16th nationally ranked Rice. The women will also be competing against Midwest regionally ranked No. 6 Tulsa, South Central's No. 7 Tulane and No. 8 SMU, South ranked No. 7 UAB, and Mountain Region No. 15 UTEP.
