TUCSON, Ariz. For the second straight day, the University of Houston golf team improved its team score to finish in a tie for 17th place at the 2006 NCAA West Regional.
A day after bettering their first round score by seven strokes, the Cougars posted their lowest team round of the 54-hole event with a 9-under-par 279. UH tied with San Diego State at 862 in the final team standings, 35 strokes behind Regional co-champions Arizona and Florida.
Three Cougar golfers fired subpar rounds on Saturday with junior Ricky Romano leading the way. Romano, a 2006 All-Conference USA Second-Team honoree, posted a team-low and career-best-tying 67 in the final round to finish at 3-over-par 219 and tie for 79th place.
It was the second 67 recorded by the Murietta, Calif., native after he posted the score in the second round of the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic on Sept. 12-13.
Sophomore Jordan Irwin recorded his third consecutive subpar round Saturday and enjoyed his best round of the NCAA postseason with a 69. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada, native finished at 5-under-par 211 to tie for 29th place.
Junior Pablo Acuna, a 2006 All-Conference USA First-Team selection posted his second straight subpar round with a 70 and tied for 46th at 2-under-par 214.
Senior Zach Mowbray tied for 72nd place at 218, while fellow senior Kevin Newman tied for 133rd after finishing at 232.
Individually, Florida's Billy Horschel and Nevada's Casey Watabu shared medalist honors at 13-under-par 203. Zach Bixler of Washington and East Tennessee State's Rhys Davies tied for third at 204.
The Cougars were part of a 27-team, 141-player field on the 7,200-yard, par-72 course at Omni Tucson National Golf Club.
The Cougars made their first appearance as a team in the NCAA postseason since the 2002 NCAA Central Regional. Cougar golfers Brett Callas (2003) and Mowbray (2004) qualified as individual players for their respective Regionals.
