CARY, N.C. - The University of Houston golf team stood in fourth place with a team score of 574 after the first day of the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate.
The Cougars, who are ranked No. 43 in the latest Golfweek poll, stood seven strokes behind first-day co-leaders North Carolina and Kentucky. Duke placed third through the first 36 holes at 568 at MacGregor Down's Country Club on the 6,787-yard, par-72 course Willard Byrd layout.
Vanderbilt (575), Kent State (576), Tulsa (576), Georgia Southern (580), North Carolina State (580), Rice (589) and Virginia Tech (589) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
Individually, senior Kevin Newman, junior Pablo Acuna and sophomore Jordan Irwin led the team at even-par 144. Newman fired the team's best round of the day with a 68 in the opening round.
Colorado's Edward McGlasson stood atop the individual leaderboard at 10-under-par 134, while Duke's Ryan Blaum was in second place one stroke behind.
The final 18 holes are scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. (CDT), Saturday. Live scoring and results for each round can be followed on-line at www.golfstat.com.
This will be the Cougars' final tune-up before the Conference USA Championship on April 17-19 at Old Waverly Country Club in West Point, Miss. It also will be the team's first action since finishing third at the UALR First/Tee Collegiate Classic on March 28-29 in Little Rock, Ark.
