Golf Moves into First-Place Tie at C-USA Championship

WEST POINT, Miss. - The University of Houston golf team fired the lowest team score of the day to move into a first-place tie after the second day at the 2006 Conference USA Championship on Tuesday.
With a score of 280, the Cougars posted a 36-hole total of 565 to tie with Memphis on the par-72, 7,000-yard course at Old Waverly Golf Club.
SMU (569), UCF (571), Tulsa (572), UAB (577), Rice (581), Southern Miss (583), East Carolina (593) and Marshall (599) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
Individually, the Cougars boasted three players among the Top 10 leaders with senior Zach Mowbray leading the way. Mowbray fired his second straight sub-par round with a 69 on Tuesday to stand in a tie with Memphis' Brad Benjamin for third-place at 140.
Junior Pablo Acuna posted the team's lowest score of the day and tied for the lowest round of the tournament with a dazzling 66. With that new career-best round, the Guatemala City, Guatemala, native rocketed up the standings and was tied for fifth place at 141 after the second day.
Senior Kevin Newman recorded a 74 in the second round to tie for 10th place at 142. Other Cougars in action were junior Ricky Romano and sophomore Jordan Irwin who were each tied for 29th place at 147.
UCF's Sonny Nimhkum and Will Dodson of SMU were tied for the lead atop the individual leaderboard at 6-under-par 138.
The Cougars will be looking for their sixth C-USA Tournament title after winning five straight years from 1997-2001. UH is the only program in the current 12-team field that has won a C-USA championship.
The final round of the tournament begins at 8 a.m., Wednesday.
