Swimmers Continue Stay at USA Spring Nationals

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Four University of Houston swimmers continued their stay Thursday during the 2006 USA Swimming Spring Championships at the King County Aquatic Center.
Freshmen Sasha Schwendenwein, Lauren VanCleave and Andrea Pa'lmai and junior Szintia Szanto are the Cougars' first national qualifiers in about 15 years.
The four Cougars combined to post a time of 8:36.87 in the 800-meter freestyle relay, good enough for a 15th-place finish.
Individually, Schwendenwein earned the Cougars' highest finish of the day, placing 41st with a time of 2:07.28 in the 200-meter freestyle.
Pa'lmai competed in two events Thursday, finishing 49th in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 5:08.81 and 87th in the 200-meter freestyle with a clocking of 2:07.28.
The meet continues through Saturday with the 100-meter backstroke, 400-meter freestyle, 100-meter breaststroke, 100-meter butterfly and the 400-meter freestyle relay. Swimmers from the college, club and international level have descended on Washington to compete in the meet.
