FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Four University of Houston swimmers began the first full day of competition Wednesday at the 2006 USA Swimming Spring Championships at the King County Aquatic Center.
Freshmen Sasha Schwendenwein, Lauren VanCleave and Andrea Pa'lmai and junior Szintia Szanto are the Cougars' first national qualifiers in about 15 years.
Szanto, a native of Budapest, Hungary, finished 24th in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:39.16. As a result, she qualified for the bonus finals.
In the bonus finals, Szanto finished seventh with a time of 2:41.97 for the best finish by a Cougar student-athlete during the day.
Pa'lmai finished 37th in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:24.60, while VanCleave finished 44th in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:22.47. Schwendenwein earned a 76th-place finish in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:00.79.
The meet continues through Saturday. Swimmers from the college, club and international level have descended on Washington to compete in the meet.
Both Schwendenwein and Pa'lmai are scheduled to compete in the 200-meter freestyle, while Pa'lmai also will take part in the 400-meter individual medley. All four student-athletes will compete as UH's entry in the 800-meter freestyle relay.
