Pozdniakova Wins 3-Meter Diving at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN and OXFORD, Ohio - University of Houston sophomore Anastasia Pozdniakova scored 383.10 points in the finals to win the 3-meter diving competition Thursday evening at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Fellow sophomore Andrea Pa'lmai finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:11.10 to lead the Cougar Swimming team during the first day of the Miami (Ohio) Invitational at the Corwin Nixon Natatorium.
Earlier in the day, Pozdniakova scored 334.65 in the preliminaries to lead all divers and emerge as the only performer to crack 300 points. In the evening session, the Elektrostal, Russia, native rode that wave of momentum to finish nearly 30 points ahead of Stanford's Cassidy Krug.
The Texas Diving Invitational continues at 12:30 p.m., Friday with the preliminaries of the 1-meter springboard. The top eight performers advanced to the finals, slated to begin around 5:15 p.m., Friday.
In an abbreviated schedule on the first day of the Miami (Ohio) meet, Pa'lmai was the Cougars' leading performer and joined with teammates Nicole Vaiana, captain Szintia Szanto and Sasha Schwendenwein to lead UH to a third-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle with a clocking of 7:37.75.
The Cougars stood in fifth place after the first day with 92 points. Oakland led the team standings with 139 points, while Cincinnati was second with 131. Truman State (120) and Denison (110) rounded out the Top Four team leaders.
The Miami (Ohio) Invitational continues at 9 a.m., Friday with the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 400-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay.
