HOUSTON - The University of Houston Diving team returns to action this weekend when it competes at the Art Adamson Invitational in the Student Rec Center Natatorium in College Station, Texas.
The three-day meet begins with the 3-meter competition on Friday, continues with the 1-meter event on Saturday and wraps up with the platform on Sunday. The diving preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. each day with the finals slated to start at 6 p.m.
Senior captain Rachel Gitelson, junior transfer Ginni van Katwijk and sophomore Anastasia Pozdniakova are scheduled to represent the Cougars at the meet. Gitelson will compete in all three events, while Pozdniakova and van Katwijk are slated to dive in the 1- and 3-meter events.
Pozdniakova, the defending Conference USA Freshman Diver of the Year, has emerged as the Cougars' leading performer in 2006-07. This season, the Elektrostral, Russia, native has twice been named C-USA Diver of the Week and recorded C-USA-best scores on both the 1- and 3-meter springboards.
van Katwijk, who joined the Cougars after transferring from Wyoming, has been steady for the Cougars throughout the season and ranks among the C-USA Top Four leaders in both springboard events.
Gitelson, who competed at the 2005 NCAA Championships as a sophomore, ranks among the Top Six individual leaders in C-USA and set a new personal best on the 3-meter board with 390.20 points during the first day of the Phill Hansel Duals Weekend on Nov. 3.
This will be the first action for the Cougars since UH won four of five dual meets at the Phill Hansel Duals Weekend on Nov. 3-4 at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium. The swimming team does not return to the competitive waters until Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational.
