HOUSTON, Texas - Sophomore Carey LaCour spun out a 48.2-second anchor leg to finalize the Houston Cougars' narrow meet-ending 4x400-meter relay victory in the Houston Indoor 0pener Saturday night at the Yeoman Field House.
Earlier, LaCour, the Conference USA Athlete of the Year at the 2005 outdoor meet, took second in the 200 in 21.92, leading his heat but placing second overall to Jarrod Connaughton of Texas-Arlington (21.51). Minutes before the men's relay.
The Lady Cougars lost a thriller to the Baylor women. Ebonie Floyd, competing for the first time in two years for UH, blasted out a 54-flat second leg for a margin of about 8 meters but Baylor's Angel Perkins edged Cheryl Garner by inches at the finish. Baylor timed 3:41.56 to 3:41.57 for UH.
Floyd also was fourth in the 55 meter sprint in 6.93.Perhaps UH's leading performance came from true freshman Seun Adigun of Glenwood, Ill. While in high school at Homewood-Flosmoor, she e-mailed UH coach Leroy Burrell of her interest in the program but her marks at the time on the track didn't elicit Burrell's interest. The summer after Adigun's senior season her marks jumped to 13.8 in the 100 hurdles and 11.79 in the 100 meter dash.
Adigun indicated her willingness to walk on without a scholarship and after her arrival at UH is receiving some financial assistance from the school. On Saturday, her first collegiate meet, Adigun provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor with her second-place time of 7.81 in the 55 hurdles barely behind UT's Melaine Walker (7.77).
After losing a jumpoff to decide the women's high jump title, UH's Caresir Hamilton opened the triple jump competition with a mark of 40-4 3/4 that stood up for the win.
UH Soph Kolee Latson took the men's 400 in 48.54, edging Baylor's Quentin Summers (48.67), Twice a five-event state meet qualifier at Lewisville,
Latson also contributed a 49.7 on the second leg of the 4x400 that sent the Cougars into the lead to stay.
Vincent Marshall led the men's prelims of the long jump but fouled on all of his three tries in the final and was passed by Baylor's Chris Gillis. Eighth in the 2005 NCAA Outdoor, Gillis went 23-9, then to his winner of 24-3 3/4.
Jonathan Reeves of UH and Texas' Brian Robison dueled in the men's shot put. Reeves took the lead in the prelims with a toss of 58-3 1/4 before Robison powered out to 58-6 1/2 in the next to last round,. Robison, a starting defensive tackle on the Longhorns' football national champs, had only three days of shot put practice.
Texas high jumper Andra Manson staged the meet's outstanding performance, setting field hous e and meet records by clearing 7-5 3/4 in the jump. The former World Junior Champ bettered the field house mark of 7-5 and meet record of 7-4 1/2.
Texas A&M ex Chris Pinnock broke meet and field house records wit his 7.18 in the 55 hurdles.
