Schwendenwein Wins 500-Yard Freestyle at Miami (Ohio) Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas & OXFORD, Ohio - University of Houston freshman Sasha Schwendenwein won the 500-yard freestyle Saturday to help lead the Cougar swimming team during the final day of the Miami (Ohio) Invitational at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
Her time of 4:59.15 was less than a quarter of a second ahead of Emory's Sam White.
The Cougars finished eighth in the 13-team swimming meet with 669 points. Denver captured the team title with 1,222.5 points, while Kenyon College placed second with 1,037 points.
A day after setting a new school record in the 400-yard individual medley, freshman Andrea Pa'lmai posted a second-place showing in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.70. The Budapest, Hungary, native also finished third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.06 in the championship finals.
Competing on the platform for the first time this season, freshman Tania Cagnotto scored 327.60 points to win by nearly 40 points over Texas' Jessica Livingston during the final day of the Texas Invitational at the Texas Swimming and Diving Center.
The Bolzano, Italy, native, who won the 3-meter championship Friday, was the only diver to score more than 300 points in the event.
Junior Anna Kiess, the defending NCAA national runner-up on the platform finished fourth with 246.00 points, while freshman Anastasia Pozdniakova - who won the 1-meter springboard event on Thursday - finished sixth with 220.10 points. Junior Rachel Gitelson scored 172.20 points to finish 10th.
The Cougars return to action on Dec. 31 when they play host to Findlay at Melcher Natatorium. The time for that meet has not been announced.
