Pozdniakova Wins 1-Meter Diving at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, TexaS & OXFORD, Ohio - University of Houston freshman diver Anastasia Pozdniakova was the only diver to crack 300 points in both the preliminaries and the finals on the 1-meter springboard on the way to a first-place finish in that event during the first day of the Texas Invitational at the Texas Swimming and Diving Center.
Meanwhile, the Cougar swimming team stood in third place with 103 points after the first day of the Miami (Ohio) Invitational at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. Denver stood atop the team leaderboard with 196 points, while Kenyon College stood in second with 114 points.
A native of Elekstrotal, Russia, Pozdniakova scored 309.40 points in the preliminaries Thursday afternoon and capped her night with 311.75 points to win the event by nearly 50 points.
Junior Rachel Gitelson scored 205.90 in the preliminaries earlier in the day during her first action of the season.
On the swimming side, freshman Andrea Pa'lmai finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:56.41, less than 1.5 seconds behind the winner, Caitlin Summers of Denver.
The Cougars' 800-yard freestyle relay team of Pa'lmai, Sasha Schwendenwein, Szintia Szanto and Marit Bloemer finished third with a time of 7:38.13.
Friday's swimming schedule includes the 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 400-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay.
The divers compete on the 3-meter springboard Friday.
