HOUSTON, Texas - Three members of the University of Houston defense were named Honorable Mention, Freshman All-America by The Sporting News, the magazine announced today. Free safety Kenneth Fontenette, inside linebacker Cody Lubojasky and defensive end Cody Pree all followed up their Conference USA All-Freshman selections with today's Honorable Mention All-America choices.
Beginning the season as a backup, Fontenette was thrust into the starting lineup just a month into the season and responded with 68 total tackles, which was good for fifth on the team. It was his strip of All-America tight end Garrett Mills and subsequent fumble recovery on the road at Tulsa that sealed the Cougars' 30-23 win over the eventual West Division champions.
Lubojasky stepped in for an injured Lance Everson and played all 11 games in the starting role, concluding his initial season with 71 total tackles, including six for losses and one sack. Pree finished with 37 total tackles, including 17 unassisted and five for losses. He tied for the team lead with four sacks and also recorded one pass breakup and one fumble recovery while starting six of 11 games this past season.
The Cougars finished the 2005 regular season with a 6-5 record and a 4-4 Conference USA mark. UH recorded its second winning season in the last three seasons, marking the first time this has happened since posting three straight winning seasons from 1988-90.
