Honolulu, Hawaii- - The University of Houston men's cross country team won the University of Hawaii's Big Wave Cross Country Invitational Saturday on Klipper Golf Course in Honolulu, Hawaii. Houston won the team title with a total of 41 team points, while Pomona-Pitzer College was the runner-up with 54 points.
Houston's Sesar Figueroa was the individual champion as he edged his teammate Ty Stanfield to win the race. Figueroa completed the five-kilometer course in 16:04, while Stanfield finished the race with a time of 16:05. Houston's Maurillio Sanchez also had a ninth-place finish with a time of 16:06, while Alex Winstel finished in 11th place with a time of 16:06, and Chris McKinstry finished in 18th place with a time of 16:42.
In the women's division the host school University of Hawaii-Manoa won the team title with 37 points. BYU-Hawaii finished in second place with 47 points, while Houston finished in third place with 93 points.
Chelsea Smith of BYU-Hawaii was the women's champion as she completed the four-kilometer course in 14:37. Shawna Florida was Houston's top runner as she finished in 10th place with a time of 16:10. Oumama Hallal had a 15th-place time of 16:25, while Laura Harlett finished in 19th place with a time of 16:39, and Veronica Ramirez finished in 24th place with a time of 16:55.
Houston's next race will be at the Notre Dame Invitational and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Oct. 1.
