ARDMORE, Okla. - The University of Houston golf team stood in 12th place Saturday after the first two rounds of The Maxwell at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla.
The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes on Sunday morning.
After shooting a 289 in the morning round, the Cougars closed out the day with a 291 during the final 18 holes to post a team score of 580, 31 strokes behind host Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma (556), Colorado (559), Augusta State (561), Tulsa (562), Oklahoma City (570), Texas-Arlington (571), North Florida (573), SMU (575), Arkansas (579) and Baylor (579) rounded out the top 11 leaders.
Individually, Colorado's Kane Webber and Oklahoma's Doug Manor stood atop the leaderboard at 134. Scott Jamieson of Augusta State, Chris Clarke of Oklahoma State, Oklahoma's Blake Martin and SMU's Scott Abbott were tied for third at 137.
Sophomore Kevin Newman was the Cougars' leading performer on Saturday at 1-over-par 141 to stand in 20th place. Zach Mowbray and Ricky Romano were tied for 41st place at 5-over-par 145.
Other Cougars in action on Saturday were Denton Walker (t-64th, 73-76 - 149) and Jordan Hasbrouck (t-85th, 80-80- -- 160).
The Maxwell tournament marks the end of the 2004 season for the Cougars. However, Mowbray will continue his campaign when he competes at the NCAA Central Regional in West Lafayette, Ind., on May 20-22. The Mesa, Ariz., native was one of six players invited to compete at the Central Regional.
