ARDMORE, Okla. - The University of Houston golf team wraps up its 2004 season this weekend as it competes at The Maxwell tournament in Ardmore, Okla.
The Cougars join Arkansas, Augusta State, Baylor, Colorado, North Florida, North Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Penn State, SMU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Texas-Arlington, Tulsa and host Oklahoma State on the 6,453-yard, par-70 course at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore.
While the team did not qualify for the NCAA Central Regional, one Cougar will use this weekend as a tune-up for postseason play. Sophomore co-captain Zach Mowbray was one of six players invited to compete at the Regional, held May 20-22 at Birck Boilermaker Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind.
This season, Mowbray has emerged as one of the Cougars' most consistent performers. He has led or tied for the team lead in each of the last five tournaments, including a seventh-place finish at the 2004 Conference USA Championship on April 19-21 in Dade City, Fla.
With a team-best 73.2 scoring average, the Mesa, Ariz., native leads his Cougar teammates by nearly a full stroke in that category.
Mowbray was joined in that seventh-place tie at the C-USA tournament by teammate Ricky Romano, who is second on the squad with a 74.2 average. For his impressive performance at the tournament, Romano was named to the C-USA All-Freshmen Team.
Other Cougars scheduled to compete at The Maxwell are senior co-captain Denton Walker, sophomore Kevin Newman and junior transfer Jordan Hasbrouck.
