HOUSTON - Fresh off their second consecutive victory and third of the year, the Houston football team is working to see that streak extended in Saturday's meeting with UAB in Birmingham.
"We had a good spirited workout, with a lot of focus, quit a bit of energy, and a lot of purpose, so we feel pretty good about where we are in the week," said head coach Art Briles of the Cougars' practice on Wednesday afternoon.
For the first time this season the Cougars are enjoying a winning streak after knocking off Tulane and East Carolina at Robertson Stadium in the last two weeks. With those wins, comes a renewed spirit and attitude to the team, one coaches have noticed making a difference in the players.
"The guys feel a lot better. We went around here for a month and a half hanging our heads, now we can get out and breath air and get a spring in our step," said Briles. "We always felt like we were a good football team, but with the way the season started, playing so many games on the road, it was hard to gain a little momentum. Now that we have that momentum hopefully we can carry it out through the rest of the year."
With two games left in the season and a couple of key players injured, freshman running back Harold Taylor will be looked to as someone who can fill some shoes and help lift the Cougars to another victory.
"Harold has got to be able to step in and make some plays because Ryan Gilbert is out," said Briles. "He did a good job last week so hopefully this week he will be able to help some more."
The Cougars head to Alabama on Friday for their Saturday matchup with the Blazers. Kick off is set for 4:00 p.m. and can be heard live on Star 790, KBME-AM with the pregame show beginning 45 minutes prior to kickoff.
