HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving program opened its 2004-05 season Wednesday afternoon with the annual Red-White Meet at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center on the UH campus.
Both the swimmers and divers were divided into Red and White teams with each side squaring off against one another during the intrasquad meet, which featured events at unique distances.
Senior captain Kristin Bay led the Red Team on the swimming side with victories in the 25-yard freestyle, 75-yard freestyle and the 50-yard backstroke. She was the only competitor for either team to win three individual events.
Sophomore Szintia Szanto, who posted some of UH's Top 10 fastest times in four different events a year ago, led the White Team with victories in the 100-yard individual medley and 75-yard breaststroke and placed second in the 75-yard butterfly.
Sophomore Alejandra Salazar led the Red Team in the distance events with first-place finishes in the 800-yard freestyle and the 350-yard freestyle. Red teammate Stacey Williams finished tops in the 75-yard butterfly and the 300-yard individual medley.
Sophomore Anna Kiess won both diving events for the Red Team, tallying 129.70 points on the 3-meter springboard and 128.95 points on the 1-meter board.
The White Team won two of the three relay events with victories in the 250-yard medley relay and the 300-yard freestyle relay. Szanto and freshman Nicole Vaiana led the White Team as members of both winning relay squads.
Vaiana also earned a first-place finish in the 125-yard freestyle.
