HOUSTON - As the University of Houston swimming and diving program continues toward its season-opening meet, the Cougars named their team captains for the 2004-05 season.
Seniors Kristin Bay and Meagan Wien and junior Azul Almazan were elected captains in a vote by their teammates.
A three-year letterwinner, Bay was a leader for the Cougars in the backstroke and sprint freestyle events. The Tyler, Texas, native owned nine of the team's Top 10 fastest times in the 50-yard freestyle and posted the 10 fastest clockings in the 100-yard backstroke.
Wien is a two-year letterwinner who competed in seven different events a year ago but was a regular in the sprint and middle-distance freestyle events.
Almazan has been a consistent performer for the Cougars throughout her career. A year ago, she was honored as the C-USA Diver of the Year and was a four-time recipient of the C-USA Diver of the Week award. In addition, she qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season after winning the NCAA Zone D Diving meet.
The Cougars, under the leadership of head coach Mark Taylor and diving head coach Jane Figueiredo, continue preparations for the season opener with the annual Red-White meet at 3 p.m., Wednesday at the Campus Recreation Wellness Center Natatorium.
UH officially opens its 2004-05 season when it plays host to Texas at 5 p.m., Oct 16 at the CRWC Natatorium. All meets are free and open to the public, which is invited to attend.
