And Where is Burris Now?
After graduating from the college of business, Burris started a landscaping company, Landscape Innovations. Today, he and his son James Burris III still manage that company. Their company maintains the grounds around football's Robertson Stadium, baseball's Cougar Field and the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Why did you get into landscaping?
"I have always been interested in it. I played a lot of golf when I was young, and I always liked the way things looked when they were manicured. When I was a Little League player, I would mow and line the field. My father bought a lawnmower, so I took care of the lawn for most of my younger years. Besides sports, this is primarily the only job that I have had in my life."
What is your greatest memory as a Cougar?
"I was recruited under Bill Yeoman, so I feel like I got in on the ground floor of his career and was fortunate enough to be his first veer quarterback in his offense, which was implemented during my junior year. We played in the first game in the Astrodome in 1965. My senior year, we were 8-2, which tied for the most wins at that time.
"In baseball, we beat Texas to go the College World Series and got to the championship game, so that was a high point."
