Routt Blazes to Finals of 200 Meters

Sacramento, Calif. - University of Houston sophomore sprinter Stanford Routt posted the fastest time in the semifinals of the 200 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Routt won the second heat in the semifinals with a time of 20.51 seconds. The top four finishers in each heat plus the next fastest time advanced to Saturday's final.
Routt finished 11/100 of a second ahead of Leo Bookman of Kansas, who had a time of 20.62 seconds. Christopher Lambert of Harvard was third in 20.73 seconds and Purdue's Kenneth Baxter had the fourth fastest time with 20.92 seconds. Ahmad Carroll of Arkansas also qualified with a time of 20.93 seconds.
Hampton's Jerome Mathis won the first heat with a time of 20.72 seconds. Alabama's Latonel Williams was second in 20.76 seconds and Brendon Christian of Texas was third in 20.84 seconds. Mississippi State's Pierre Brown edged his teammate Marquis Davis out of the final as he finished fourth with a time of 20.95 seconds. Davis also finished with a time of 20.95 seconds.
In the women's 4x400-meter relay, Houston failed to qualify for the final when the Lady Cougars finished third in the third of four heats with a time of 3:37.80. Texas easily won the heat with a time of 3:30.42, the fastest time in the relay. San Diego State was second in a time of 3:35.19. Rice was fourth in 3:38.30 and Iowa was fifth in a time of 3:41.52.
Houston failed to finish the finals race in the men's 4x100-meter relay and Andrew Carruthers finished seventh out of eight runners in the second heat of the semifinals in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.86 seconds. It was his best time this season.
Conference USA Freshman-of-the-Year Ebonie Floyd finished sixth in the first heat of the women's 400-meter semifinals with a time of 52.65 seconds.
