Lincoln, Neb. - Sophomore sprinter Stanford Routt won the 200-meter dash to lead the University of Houston men's track and field team to an eighth-place finish in the team standings at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships with a career-best time of 20.53 seconds. The victory earns Routt a ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. on June 11-14.
It was Routt's first 200-meter victory of the season after he finished in second place at the Conference USA Championships on May 17, the Texas Invitational on May 3 and the Houston Invitational on April 19.
Houston finished the meet with 35 points and Routt helped the Cougars to score 18 of those points with 10 points coming from his victory in the 200 meters. Houston scored eight more points with a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay.
Routt ran the first leg on the relay and the other runners were Fred Day, Brandon Womack and Robert Foster. Houston finished the race with a time of 39.31 seconds, just behind Texas' time of 39.22 seconds.
Foster was questionable to run on Saturday after he aggravated a tendon injury in his foot in the preliminary rounds of the 100-meter dash. He proved himself healthy in the relay race and then qualified for the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash.
The 100-meter final resembled the Conference USA Championships when Foster finished in third place behind TCU's Jabari Fields and defending champion Michael Frater. Frater won the race on Saturday with a time of 10.38 seconds just ahead of Fields, the 2003 C-USA champion. Fields had a time of 10.40 seconds, while Foster finished the race with a time of 10.45 seconds.
In addition, Andrew Carruthers earned a ticket to the NCAA Championships with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 51.07 seconds.
Carruthers also ran the first leg on Houston's 4x400-meter relay team that finished in 10th place at the NCAA Midwest Regional. The other members of the team were Routt, Michael Francis and Justin Schrock.
Alex Cantu registered a 12th-place finish in the men's pole vault after clearing 16 feet, 1? inches (4.91m).
Minnesota was the men's team champion with 65.50 points, while Texas A&M finished in second place with 61 points and Texas Tech and Nebraska tied for third with 56 points.
In the women's division, Houston's 4x400-meter relay team of Keisha Howard, Alicia Cave, Ebonie Floyd and Renee Clarke scored eight points for the Lady Cougars with a second-place finish in a time of 3:34.14. It was the fourth-fastest time in school history and they advanced to the NCAA Championships in Sacramento.
Cave also earned a spot in the NCAA Championship meet with a fifth-place finish in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.63 seconds.
Floyd also registered a seventh place finish in the 400-meter finals with a time of 53.16 seconds. Terie Littlepage finished in 14th place with a time of 11:19.98 in the women's steeplechase, while Allie Booker finished in 21st place with a discus throw of 141 feet, five inches.
