A handful of the University of Houston men's and women's track and field team members traveled to New York City to compete in the 2003 Armory Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center Feb. 14-15.
The two-day meet, which is annually recognized as one of the top indoor meets in the nation, featured schools from all over the country. Among the competition field in the Championship Division, of which Houston took part, included Alabama, Georgetown, LSU, Maryland, Michigan State, North Carolina, Princeton, Purdue, Seton Hall, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Villanova and Wisconsin.
Top performers for the Cougars included the women's 4x400 relay team, which bested its NCAA-provisional time set the week before at the Houston Invitational, and sprinter Robert Foster, who also once again beat his previous provisional mark in the men's 200-meter dash.
The women's relay team finished fourth overall in the meet behind South Carolina, LSU and Seton Hall in a time of 3:39.17, a full second better than its provisional time from a week before (3:40.17).
Distance runner Jessie Oakes placed seventh in the women's 5,000-meter with a personal and team-best finish of 17:38.30, while sprinter Aisha Morgan finished eighth in the women's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.70 seconds and hurdler Magenta Taylor finished in eight place with a finish of 8.74 seconds in the women's 60-meter hurdles race.
For the men, Foster was the highlight in topping his provisional time set the previous week at the Houston Invitational and finishing fifth overall in a time of 21.46 seconds in the men's 200-meter dash.
Distance runner Mike Olague finished second among the field in the men's 5,000-meter run in a time of 14:29.48, while fellow distance runner Sesar Figueroa set a team season mark in closing out the mile in 4:15.29 to finish in fourth place.
