HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team continued its preparations for their first bowl appearance since 1996 with another strong practice Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars will face Hawai'i at 7 p.m., (CST) Dec. 25, during the 2003 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Cougar head coach Art Briles said the team is getting ready for the game like any other game, however they realize its importance.
"We're preparing like every other game, but we understand the importance of winning a bowl game," he said. "We haven't won one around here in 23 years, or had an eight-win season since 1990. It's a chance to really make a mark as a football team, so that's really our main objective.
With the opportunity to bring home a bowl win, Briles said the team is ready to take the next step.
"We want to take it to the next level," Briles said. "We stepped up one level by qualifying for a bowl game, now we need to win that bowl game to take the next step. It's nice to go over there and play but we want to go over there and win. This is a business trip for us. It's an opportunity to go do something for the University of Houston and our football program."
