Golf Finishes in 11th Place at Long Beach State Tournament

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of Houston golf team wrapped up its fall season Friday with an 11th-place finish at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif.
The Cougars, who entered the day in 11th place in the 13-team field, fired a final team score of 289 on Friday in their best round of the tournament on the 6,633-yard, par-71 course at Virginia Country Club. However, the team was unable to make up any ground in the final team standings.
Freshman Ricky Romano led the Cougars in scoring after shooting an even-par 74 in the final round to finish in a tie for 26th-place at 6-over-par 219 .
Senior Denton Walker and freshman Blake Parks were the only Cougars to shoot even par or better in the final round. Walker fired a 7-over-par 220 to tie for 31st place , while Parks tied for 45th at 10-over-par 223.
Other Cougars competing in the event were Zach Mowbray (76 - 221, t-39th) and Jordan Hasbrouck (73 -- 225, t-54th)
UC Riverside shot a team score of 280 in the final round, the best score of the tournament, to snare the team championship with a 54-hole score of 855. Texas-San Antonio finished in second at 857, while Lamar placed third at 862. North Texas, UC Santa Barbara, San Jose State, Long Beach State, Cal Poly, Arizona and Pacific rounded out the Top 10 leaders.
Individually, Lamar's Chris Stroud grabbed medallist honors with a score of 1-under-par 202, four strokes better than UC Santa Barbara's Brian Six.
The Cougars will now take a lengthy break and don't return to action until Feb. 11-13 when they open the 2004 spring season at the Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Kona, Hawaii.
