HOUSTON, Texas - After a weekend off and a week and a half worth of practices, the University of Houston Cougars are ready to hit the field against Southern Miss.
The Cougars host the Golden Eagles at 4 p.m., Saturday afternoon at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium in UH's annual Homecoming game.
"We've had a good week of practice and our guys are really focused," UH head coach Art Briles said. "We've got our direction pretty much mapped out, now we're on a journey to do it."
The time off for the Cougars gave them an opportunity to get fresh before the final four games of the year. Briles said the break was good for the team.
"It gave us the opportunity to refuel and refocus and get fresh, " he said. "We're ready to go. We feel good. It's Thursday and we'll be ready to go on Saturday."
Houston and USM enter the contest with identical 5-3 season records, but the Golden Eagles are a perfect 4-0 in Conference USA play while the Cougars are 2-2 after a 62-55 loss to TCU their last time out. Briles said the game Saturday is an important one for both teams.
"Every game from here on out is an important one for us, not only for conference but for bowl implications," Briles said. " We're going to play each play, each second and each minute like it's the last one we'll have. We have to go out and establish our self early and become a dominant team early in the football game."
