Cougars Sign Five Track and Field Athletes

Houston, Texas- - University of Houston head track and field coach Leroy Burrell announced that Christa Coppin, Scott Duckworth, Jarrett Flax, Michael Martelly and Stephen Moreno have signed to compete for the Cougars in 2003-04.
Christa Coppin is a pole vaulter from Smithson Valley High School in Bulverde, Texas. She was the District 27-5A champion and recorded a fifth place finish at the Region IV-5A Championships with her personal best vault of 11 feet.
Jarrett Flax is a decathlete from Pearland, Texas and attends Lutheran South Academy High School. Flax had a second place finish in the decathlon with 6,488 points and a 17th place finish in the javelin throw with a mark of 151 feet, 7 inches at the 2003 USA Junior Olympics in Miami, Fla.
Scott Duckworth is a pole vaulter from The Woodlands and attends Klein Oak High School. Duckworth finished in fourth place at the Class 5A UIL State Championships with a vault of 15 feet, 9 inches. He also finished in 12th place at the 2003 USA Junior Olympics and in second place at the 2003 Region II-5A Championships with a mark of 15 feet, 3 inches.
Michael Martelly and Moreno are from Houston and attend Humble High School and MacArthur High School in Aldine, respectfully. Martelly registered a fifth-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 49.27 seconds at the Region III-5A Championships in 2003. He also ran the second leg of Humble's 4x400-meter relay team with current UH sprinter Carey LaCour. Humble was the 4x400-meter relay state champions with a time of 3:10.69.
Stephen Moreno was a 2003 state qualifier in cross country after recording a fifth-place finish at the 2003 Region III Championships with a time of 16:02 on November 8.
