LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Houston swimming and diving team began a busy weekend with a winning performance Friday night in a tri-meet against Kentucky and Conference USA rival Louisville at the Lancaster Aquatic Center in Lexington, Ky.
Freshman swimmer Szintia Szanto earned a pair of first-place finishes, while sophomore diver Azul Almazan placed among the top two leaders in both springboard events as the Cougars took a dominating 182-50 win over Louisville before being edged by host Kentucky 124-110.
The Cougars' weekend continues at noon Saturday when they meet C-USA rivals Louisville and Cincinnati in another tri-meet in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Szanto took first place in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:26.46, making her the fourth-fastest performer in UH history in that event. The Budapest, Hungary, native followed that effort with a time of 2:24.92 in the 200-yard breaststroke to claim her second first-place finish of the day.
Almazan continued her winning ways with two solid performances in the springboard diving events. The Mexico City, Mexico, native won for the third consecutive meet in the 3-meter event with 292.75 points to finish nearly 30 points ahead of her closest competitor and placed second in the 1-meter event with 245.20 points.
Freshman Haley Menard earned the Cougars' other first-place finish with a time of 53.83 in the 100-yard freestyle.
The Cougars' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Laura Starr, Melissa Wright, Lucile Turpin and Haley Menard also placed first with a time of 3:40.41, more than four seconds faster than the closest team.
Kristin Bay placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.92, and Melissa Wright finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:22.42.
In diving, freshman Anna Kiess finished second on the 3-meter board with 273.00 points, nearly 40 points than the third-place diver.
