Houston Signs Five Track and Field Athletes

University of Houston head track and field coach Leroy Burrell announced that Sheniqua Pace, Shawna Florida, Katie Ryan, Justin Schrock, Jordan Mumford and Jacob Rodriguez have signed to compete with the Cougars in 2002-03. Florida and Ryan are cross country and distance runners from Klein High School in Spring, Texas.
Florida competed in the 3,200 meters and finished sixth at the Region II-5A Championships with a time of 11:29.40. She advanced to the regional championships after finishing second at the Woodlands Regional Qualifier meet with a time of 11:42.5. She also was the runner-up at the District 15-5A Championships with a time of 11:29.70 and finished third in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:15.32.
Ryan was named the outstanding senior athlete and most improved runner on Klein's cross country team in 2001. Ryan also ran on Klein's 4x1600-meter relay team that set a new school record in 2002. She is the daughter of current UH men's cross country and distance coach Howie Ryan.
Pace is a high jumper from Humble High School and was the District 22-5A champion.
Mumford is a decathlete from Rockwall, Texas. He finished fourth at the USA Junior National Combined Events Championships with 6,641 points after tying a three-year state record at the Texas Greatest Athlete meet in Dallas on June 8. Mumford won the decathlon when he scored 6,729 points at the Texas Greatest Athlete meet.
Rodriguez is a shot put and discus thrower from Taft High School. Rodriguez finished second in the discus with a throw of 183'8" and third in the shot put with a mark of 58' 1.50" at the 2002 Texas High School Class 3A State Championships.
He also finished third in the discus as a junior. Rodriguez is a five-time district champion and three-time regional winner in both events throughout his high school career.
Schrock is a middle distance runner at Klein High School in Spring, Texas. He was a third place finisher in the 400 meters at the District 15-5A Championships with a time of 48.33 seconds. He also ran the third leg on Klein's 4x400-meter relay team that finished third at the Region II-5A Championships with a time of 3:17.69. UH basketball signee Dwight Jones ran the anchor leg on the relay team.
