After the first week of the annual spring practice, third-year University of Houston head football coach Dana Dimel is liking what he sees. With five practices under his belt, Dimel is beginning to witness the formation of what could be his team of Cougars this fall.
"We've been looking for great enthusiasm from our players," commented Dimel, "and we wanted to get out here and see where guys fit. We are starting to see how they move around after their off-season conditioning.
"We've been looking at the redshirts to see where they fit in and start our competition for starting position during spring ball.
Dimel feels that by Monday of next week he should have a better idea of his two-deep as he heads into the summer break. Heading into the final two weeks of the spring rite of passage, there are several spots on the two-deep still up for grabs.
It's this competition that Dimel and his staff enjoy during spring practice.
"We've had some really good practices," added Dimel. "Now, we have to start working to get to our two-deep. That is what we're trying to get to at this stage (of spring practice.)
"We will try (to get the depth chart) established at Saturday's scrimmage, then start to make decisions on who'll be a part of the two-deeps.
So far, Dimel has been pleased with some of the positional changes that he implemented before embarking upon the spring drills, most notably, sophomore Matt Schirmer's switch from fullback to linebacker, senior Rufus Williams' shift to offensive tackle and redshirt freshman Cody Thibodeaux's return to running back after a brief trial at linebacker.
As mentioned, the Cougars will hold a controlled scrimmage at Robertson Stadium on Saturday, March 30, beginning at 10 a.m., after another practice this Friday. UH will then return to practice fields for its regular, Monday, Wednesday and Friday workouts next week.
