Cougars Finish Fourth At Longhorn Invitational

Austin, Texas - The University of Houston men's track and field team had a fourth-place finish at the Longhorn Invitational Saturday at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. Sean Clayton won the men's triple jump with a leap of 49 feet, 9 ? inches and the Cougars had four second-place finishes in the men's division.
The Lady Cougars finished second and claimed two individual titles and had six second-place finishes to score 110 points. Shayla Bowman won the women's hammer throw with a mark of 136 feet, 6 inches, and Julie Perez won the women's 3000-meter steeplechase in 11:01.68.
Greg Christie made his 2002 season debut with a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles as he finished the race in 53.97 seconds. Milton Manson was second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.24 seconds.
Brandon Bray was second in the men's long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 9 inches and finished just ahead of teammate Jason Edwards, who was third with a wind-aided mark of 23 feet, 2 ? inches. Adam Callahan was second in the men's high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 9 ? inches.
Texas also won the men's team title with 168 points. Texas A&M was second with 119.50 points, Texas Tech was third with 113 points, while Houston was fourth with 101 points and UT-San Antonio was fifth with 24.50 points.
In the women's division, All-American Rhian Clarke finished second in the women's pole vault with a mark of 13 feet, 3 ? inches, while Lauren Smith finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.56 seconds.
Alicia Cave also was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.55 and was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.77 seconds. Houston's 4x100-meter relay was second in a time of 45.46 seconds.
Briana Bassler placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 ? inches, Tinisha Wesley also was second in the shot put with a mark of 43 feet, 11 ? inches and Allie Booker was second in the discus with a throw of 137 feet, 6 inches.
Texas won the women's team title with 169 points, while UT-San Antonio was third with 88 points and Texas A&M was fourth with 83 points.
Houston returns home to host the Tom Tellez Invitational next Saturday, March 30. The meet will begin with field events at 10:00 a.m. and running events will start at 1:00 p.m.
