Men's Track Takes Third At C-USA Championships

Bloomington, Ind. - The University of Houston women's track and field team won their second Conference USA indoor track and field championship at Bloomington, Ind. on Saturday, Feb. 23.
The Lady Cougars posted a score of 107 to earn its second-ever C-USA women's indoor title. South Florida followed in second with 89.5 points, while Marquette (77.5), East Carolina (66) and TCU (52) rounded out the Top 5 spots.
Houston's men's team finished third in the men's division as first-year league member TCU captured the men's title with 133 points. Charlotte was second with 120.5 points, and Houston scored 84.5 points in the meet. East Carolina (75) and DePaul (62) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
The UH women's team boasted four individual champions, and the Lady Cougars also won a relay title.
After Rhian Clarke captured her third straight C-USA pole vault title with a season-best mark of 13 feet, 2 ? inches, Lauren Smith and Courtnie Ratliff led the Lady Cougars on Saturday.
Smith captured the 60-meter hurdles title with a time of 8.44, finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 24.74 seconds and ran the third leg of Houston's record-setting 4x400-meter relay team.
Ratliff won 400-meter dash with a time of 55.64, and anchored the relay team that won the event with a time of 3:44.40.
In addition, freshman Nichole Brundage won the women's high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches.
Sophomore Jessica Edwards finished second behind Clarke in the women's pole vault with a mark of 11 feet, 5 ? inches.
In addition, Alicia Cave finished second in the 60-meter hurdles just ahead of teammate, Lindsay Cobbs, who completed the race in 8.67 seconds. It is the second straight year that Houston has won all three placings in the women's hurdle event. Cave also joined Smith, Ratliff and Crystal Freeman on the 4x400-meter relay.
In the men's field events, Houston swept the pole vault event, taking the top three spots. Daniel Patton finished first with a leap of 16-00.75, followed by teammates Jason Myers (15-07) and Alex Cantu (15-01), who finished second and third, respectively.
Adam Callahan won the men's pole vault on Friday with a leap of 6 feet, 10 ? inches, while Jason Edwards was third in the long jump with a mark of 24 feet, five inches.
Freshmen Milton Manson and Andrew Carruthers finished third and fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, respectively. Manson had a time of 8.13 seconds and edged Carruthers who finished the race in 8.14 seconds.
For the awards, Houston head coach Leroy Burrell was named the C-USA Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year, while TCU's Monte Stratton won the C-USA Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year honors. Eliud Njubi of TCU earned C-USA Men's Athlete of the Year honor and Louisville's Shola Kadiri won C-USA Women's Athlete of the Year award. East Carolina's Benjamin Henderson, who anchored the Pirates victorious 4x400 relay, captured the league's Freshman of the Year (men), while South Florida's Bentz General won the Freshman of the Year award on the women's side.
