Houston, Texas - University of Houston head track and field coach Leroy Burrell announced that two-time state champion Lisa Wilson, 2002 state runner-ups Jennifer Hunt and Brandon Dixon, Carey LaCour, Alex Valdez and Chelsea Belew have signed to compete for the Cougars in 2003-04.
Wilson attends Wilmer Hutchins High School in Dallas, Texas, and was the 2002 Class 3A state champion in the 100 meters.
"Lisa is going to be a tremendous asset to our program and is one of the elite high school sprinters in the country this year," Burrell said. "We haven't signed a sprinter of her stature in several years. We feel that she has the potential to contend for All-American status in college and develop into to be an Olympic caliber sprinter."
Hunt, who is from Dallas Skyline High School, was the runner-up behind current Cougar Ebonie Floyd in the 400 meters at the Texas Class 5A State Championships.
"We also feel that Jennifer has the potential to develop into a world-class caliber athlete as well," Burrell said. "She has a chance to develop into an All-American as a senior in high school and at the collegiate level as well."
Dixon is from Houston's Lamar High School and finished second in the 800 meters at the Texas Class 5A State Championships.
"Brandon Dixon ran a 1:49 at the USATF Youth Nationals," Burrell said. "He has the talent to develop into a world-class runner as well. He will run a leg on our relay and compete in the 800 meters for us."
LaCour is a sprinter and hurdler from Humble High School, and has run 21 seconds in the 200 and 13.72 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles.
"Carey has excelled in the hurdles and sprints," Burrell said. "We feel that we got a steal in him because he will be at or near the top of the high school lists when its all said and done. He will help us in our hurdles and relays."
Valdez is a cross country and distance runner from Alvin High School. He was the District 15-5A champion in cross country this fall and just missed qualifying for the state meet after finishing in 11th place at the Region III-5A Championships. He competes in the mile and two-mile runs during the track season.
Belew is a 800-meter and mile runner from Spring High School.
