Houston, Texas - The University of Houston football team finds itself in a near must win situation when the Cougars travel to Birmingham, Ala. for a Conference USA game at UAB. Houston enters the game with a 2-3 overall record and the Cougars are 0-2 in C-USA play after suffering losses against Tulane and at TCU.
"This is a year where two losses in conference play doesn't eliminate you from the conference race," Houston head coach Dana Dimel said. "But we need to get a win and get on some kind of roll pretty quickly. This season, as balanced as the league is, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the teams contending for the C-USA championships has four losses."
What makes Houston's two losses in conference play so frustrating is that the Cougars felt they had chances to win both games.
"We had great opportunities to win the games against Tulane and TCU, but didn't," Dimel said. "We need to find a way to win some close games."
Dimel has been pleased with Houston's defensive unit this season.
"Our defense played a very good game at TCU, but they didn't play outstanding game because they didn't hold (the Horned Frogs) to one point less that our offensive unit scored. Offensively, we need to improve our execution and we are buckling down to improve this week."
