Moderator: Good morning, everyone.
We are fortunate to have UH golf head coach Mike Dirks with us today for an on-line chat. We have a few questions already submitted, so we will get to those first, but please feel free to ask as we go along.
Coach Dirks has just walked in so, let's get going.
Houston: You have done an Awesome job at UH. How can we get the city of Houston excited about UH Golf, is it possible? I've always told my friends about how awesome our team is, and I wish that they could be marketed here locally so that Houstonians see that we have alot to offer to the City.
Mike Dirks: We're looking at bringing back the All-America Intercollegiate Invitational to Houston in the spring of 2004. Hopefully, by bringing in the best teams to the city of Houston, we can showcase our program as well as the top college programs in the country. Maybe, this can help get the city of Houston behind our golf program.
James Ruth. England: I am an england boy International off a handicap of plus 2, and i would like to know what i need to do to get into houston university?
Mike Dirks: First, any university you are looking at would need a record of your schooling in England as well as a test score, either SAT or ACT. Mail that to the colleges that you choose and follow up with a phone call. Be persistent and good luck! Roger (Katy): It seems the team has struggled in the fall. How concerned are you about that entering the spring?
Mike Dirks: The team has not performed up to expectations during the fall season. Two of our underclassmen turned pro early this fall and we have had to play some less experienced players than we wanted to. We are looking at adding some new members to the team for the spring semester. With these new additions and the available practice time from now until the start of the spring season, we will work on improving our deficiencies. Thanks for your concern and support. Steve (Pearland): What do you think of the team's chances in the Conference USA Tournament?
Mike Dirks: During the last six years, we have finished no worse than second with five championships. I feel this year will be no different. I expect us to be competing for the championship during the last nine holes of the third round. Moderator: How is recruiting going this year, Coach Dirks?
Mike Dirks: We have verbal commitments from two of the top four players in the state of Texas and are waiting for another top 20 prospect in the nation to decide. Rick Derry, NH: great job at UH!! how did u get into golf? how old were you? what is the most effective aspect to be a golf player?
Mike Dirks: I got into golf by watching the game on TV. Neither one of my parents played golf. I was nine years old when I took up the game. To be able to handle adversity is important. If you can handle adversity better than you competitior, you can be successful.
David(Houston): I read in the papers a few years ago that some former players were developing a subdivision and building a golf course which was going to be the home course for UH. I haven't heard anything more about that and just wondering if that is still in the works?
Mike Dirks: That project is no longer going to take place. We are currently working on building a practice facility for our program. Details will follow. Rodney(Sacramento): Do you think tiger woods is the best player?
Mike Dirks: He is the best player in the world, with no one even close. Moderator: Thanks to Coach Dirks for taking the time to talk with us today. The Cougars are off for the spring season until Februry, but we will have future on-line chats. Check on www.uhcougars.com for future chats with all UH coaches.
Thanks for joining us, and have a good day!
