The University of Houston golf team opens up the 2001-2002 this Saturday and Sunday, September 8-9, at The Ridges Intercollegiate Invitational in Johnson City, Tennessee.
A youthful, new-look lineup will hitting the links for Head Coach Mike Dirks this season. There are no seniors on the squad but the Cougars return a number of talented players including sophomore Brad Mcintosh, the defending Conference USA individual champion. The native of Wollongong, Australia, (the same hometown as Cougar great and PGA pro Steve Elkington) is the team's top returning scorer from a year ago with an average of 73.3 strokes per round. Veteran Simon Robinson, a member of the C-USA All-Tournament team, also returns with a 73.6 scoring average.
Last season at The Ridges the Cougars tied for seventh in the prestigious 14-team field. Junior Brett Callas and sophomore Scott Ferguson and junior transfer Chris Cureton will round-out the Houston five this week. Cureton, a native of McKinney, Texas, joined UH after two seasons at the University of Oklahoma.
