Houston, Texas - The University of Houston men's and women's cross country teams won both division of the Houston Invitational at Allen Parkway on Friday, September 21, 2001. The Lady Cougars had five of the top six finishers in the women's race as the easily won the team title with 19 points. In the men's division, the Cougars had the top seven runners and finished with 15 points as a team.
Sophomore Jessica Oakes was the women's individual champion as she completed the 5,000-meter course in 17:13. Texas-Pan American's Perla Rios-Hardy finished second with a time of 17:30, while former Lady Cougar, Jackie Rzepecki, competed unattached and finished third with a time of 17:37.
Freshman Veronica Ramirez was fourth with a time of 17:51, while junior Heather Howse was fifth in 17:57. Houston's Kelly McCarty and Julie Perez were the other top runners for Houston. McCarty finished sixth in 18:02 while Perez was seventh in a time of 18:06.
In the men's division, junior Toartou Kargou was the men's champion as he completed the 6,000 meter course in a time of 21:03.
Sophomore Jared Kuntz finished second in 21:05, while sophomore Juan Cardenas was third with a time of 21:11. Freshman Ronnie Martinez was fourth with a time of 21:11 and senior Kevin Ward was fifth in 21:17.
