Eugene, Ore. - Former University of Houston All-American John Davis survived a real scare in the shot put at the 2001 GMC Envoy USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, June 22.
Davis, who finished in third place with a best put of 67-feet, 3 and 1/2 inches, recorded two fouls on his final two throws in the second flight of the event.
"I was about to have a heart attack out there," Davis said. "It was all so close. I'm happy to escape with third place."
John Godina won the event with a put of 70 feet, 10 and 1/2 inches, while Adam Nelson was second with a throw of 67 feet, 3 and 1/2 inches.
Davis finished third just ahead of Andrew Bloom, who ended the event in fourth place with a throw 67 feet, 1 and 1/4 inches.
With his third place finish, Davis qualifies to compete in the IAAF World Championships August 3-12 in Edmonton, Canada.
Davis will be joined by three other former UH All-Americans Jenny Adams, Michele Collins and Sandra Glover.
Adams will compete in the women's 100-meter hurdles, while Collins will run in the women's 400 meters and Glover will be competing in the 400-meter hurdles after winning the event at the 1999 IAAF World Championships.
Adams also won the long jump at the USA Championships, but must meet the IAAF standards to compete in that event at the World Championships.
