Houston Signs Four Track and Field Stars

Houston, Texas - University of Houston head track and field coach Leroy Burrell announced that Sesar Fiquero, Ebonie Floyd, Derek Randall and Maurilio Sanchez have signed with the Cougars during the early signing period.
University of Houston head track and field coach Leroy Burrell announced that Sesar Fiquero, Ebonie Floyd, Derek Randall and Maurilio Sanchez have signed with the Cougars during the early signing period.
Fiquero comes to UH from Lee High School in Baytown. He is a 2001 All-Greater Houston selection by The Houston Chronicle after finishing third at the 2001 UIL state cross country championships with a time of 15:44.9 in the 5,000-meter race at Round Rock.
On the track, Fiquero also was a two-time district cross country champion and won the 3,200 and 1,600 meters at the district championships. He also finished third in the 3,200 meters and sixth in the 1,600 meters at the 2001 regional championships.
Floyd, the daughter of former UH NCAA Champion and Olympian Stanley Floyd and NCAA All-American Delissa Walton-Floyd of Tennessee, comes to Houston from Alief Hastings High School.
She was the District 19-5A champion in the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.80. Her career-best time in the event is 54.03. She also has a time of 24.4 in the 200 meters. She ranks among the nation's top 12 high school 400-meter runners this season by Dye Stats.
Randall is a discus thrower from Beeville High School. He was the 2000 and 2001 Texas High School state champion with a throw of 191-11. He also won the discus at the 2000 and 2001 Texas Relays. He ranks among the nation's top two high school discus throwers.
Sanchez is from Needville High School. He is a two-time District 24-3A cross country champion and a 2001 regional champion in cross country. On the track, Sanchez also was the district and regional champion while setting a new school records in the mile and two-mile runs as a junior with a time of 9:46 in the two mile run.
His record-seting times were 4:31 in the mile and 9:46 in the two-mile runs. He will compete in both events next spring.
