HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston swimming and diving team continues its 2001 season when it faces LSU in a 3 p.m. dual meet Friday in Baton Rouge, La.
The Cougars (0-1) come into the meet on the heels of a 175-87 loss at third-ranked Texas last week.
The meet will feature the award-winning Cougar divers for the first time this season after that portion of the squad sat out against the Longhorns. Yulia Pakhalina leads the way for UH after capturing both the one-meter and three-meter springboard diving national championships last season.
The Cougars informally opened their season on Sept. 29 with the annual Red-White meet.
The White Team earned a 155-129 victory as three swimmers won multiple events. Lucile Turpin led all swimmers by taking first place in three events -- the 200-yard butterfly, the 500-yard freestyle and the 400-yard individual medley -- while Kristen Douglass swept both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. Stacey Ebeling also took top honors in both the 100- and 200-yard breastroke events.
Pakhalina led the way for the Red Team by winning both the one- and three-meter springboard diving competitions.
A year ago, UH opened its season against the Tigers in a dual meet but walked away with a 133-94 loss. This will be the season opener for LSU.
