Turiya Coleman picks up her second consecutive all-conference honors; Aguilar earns All-Big 12 Freshman team selection
HOUSTON – Two University of Houston Softball student-athletes received postseason honors from the Big 12 Conference, the league announced in advance of the first round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship on Wednesday. Junior Turiya Coleman earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Second Team while Bethany Aguilar was voted to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team.
Â
Coleman led the way for the Cougars from behind the plate in the team's first season in the Big 12, posting a .320/.400/.480 slash in conference play with 24 hits, including five for extra bases, and 12 RBIs.Â
Â
Overall on the season, Coleman led the team with a .377 average and 57 hits while driving home 45 runs. She also added eight home runs, 39 runs and 18 walks. The Houston native tied her career high in home runs while nearly doubling her RBI total from 2023 when she collected 26. The Cougars' everyday catcher caught seven runners stealing and tallied 137 putouts.
Â
The All-Big 12 Second Team honor adds to her Preseason All-Big 12 honor as well as her unanimous All-American Athletic Conference accolade in 2023. The junior was also a 2023 NFCA All-Region award winner.Â
Â
Aguilar became Houston's regular second baseman midway through league play and quickly solidified her role as a reliable middle infielder. The San Benito, Texas, native recorded 42 putouts and 23 assists with only one error in league play. She added 12 hits in 20 starts throughout the year, scoring six runs with two sacrifice hits.
Â
Making her first career start in the series finale against BYU, Aguilar went 4-for-6 with three RBIs while adding seven assists against the Cougars.Â
Â
Houston begins its first trip to the Big 12 Championship tonight with a first-round tilt against seven-seed Kansas at 5 p.m. at OGE Field at Devon Park in Oklahoma City. The game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.Â
